Dedicated to the memory of Frances McCarthy

This site is a tribute to Frances McCarthy, who sadly passed away at Mill House Care Home in Great Ryburgh on April 7th aged 88 years. Cherished wife and mother, she is much loved and will always be remembered.

Here is a place where you can share thoughts, memories, stories or photos of her - I would love to read them and they will be greatly treasured.

As many of you will know, Mum lived with dementia for a number of years and so, for anybody who wishes to, we are asking for any donations in lieu of flowers or in her memory to be made to Dementia UK.

With love and thanks, Fiona

A celebration of Frances McCarthy's life

Thoughts

I am one of the people who had the privilege of caring for Frances in later life; My fondest memories being those from earlier years of her time at Millhouse where she would be a fountain of knowledge relaying beguiling tales of her former work with fascinating books, and of her poetic wanders through the countryside. Frances was a driving force in installing a reading corner in the home for everyone to use, and took great pleasure in the decoration and creation of this space. She would re-organise books daily, plump the cushions, and recommend what to read (whether the person she was giving the recommendation to was interested or not!) She would also pick flowers from the garden for the dining tables - always enquire about the well-being of others, offer to help with teas and coffees and generally be beautiful person to have around. Frances always had such a positive attitude beneath anything that troubled her and was one of the first to suggest we all work as a team (both staff and residents) during the "beast from the east" snowstorm and set about guiding other ladies residing at the home folding linen and pairing socks, offered to clean and suggested new recipes to conserve food. There are so many occasions where Frances reinforced her right for fondness from everyone she interacted with. Such an honour to have spent the time with her I did. And to work with her wonderful daughter who I have to say is one of the nicest and loveliest NOK's I have ever encountered, She (Frances) will undoubtedly be held in the highest esteem in the hearts of many for many many more years to come. As will Fiona,

How nice it is to see pictures of Frances from when she was younger. A truly beautiful woman inside and out! Even though I knew her towards the end of her life, I realized that she was a very good person. She was part of the Mill House family and brought many smiles to our faces. I hope that after the suffering on this earth will end and our Heavenly Father will come to take us to Him to meet Frances in heaven! ❤️🥹

Lovely to see Fiona’s memories. I only met Frances late in life (and Fiona in adulthood), but she obviously delighted in her daughters and probably enjoyed those playground whirls as much as you did! She was keen to tell me what lovely girls you both were. So sorry for your loss, and love to all your family.
